Cycling

Bicycle User Group (BUG)

UWA BUG

UWA has an active Bicycle User Group (BUG).

Events

There are University events for cyclists throughout the year to encourage sustainable transport:

Cycling, even occasionally, will save you money because you won’t have to pay for parking, petrol or public transport.

Obviously, the closer you are to UWA the more likely it is you can enjoy the option of cycling.

If you live locally, cycling will not only save money, it will also save time. For example, it takes approximately 20 minutes to cycle from Leederville but 50 minutes on buses, because you need to transfer to a UWA bus in the city.

Even if you shower on campus, it is quicker to cycle and you also benefit by getting exercise.

Bike security

U-Rails

To secure your bike, use the U-Rails that are provided all over campus.

Kryptonite D-Shackle bike lock

Bikes are stolen at UWA and it is worth investing in a quality bike lock – for example, a Kryptonite D-Shackle bike lock (available at a significant discount from the UWA Recreation Centre).

If you have an average to high-quality bike, use a quality locking system to protect it, because thieves seem to target bikes worth stealing.

The risk of theft is lower if you use a cheap bike

If you have a less valuable bike the risk of theft is much lower. Many short-distance commuters use a cheap bike for UWA and save their more expensive bike for “serious” cycling.

Don’t assume your bike will be safe if it’s near you

Many staff members and postgraduate students store their bikes in their rooms or other convenient locations inside UWA buildings.

You should always lock your bike and not assume it will be safe if it’s near you.

The University’s administration does not support this practice and policing varies from building to building.

There is a bike cage under the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery - contact Facilities Management on (+61 8) 6488 2023 for more information. UWA is planning to install additional secure bike facilities (for example, rooms and cages) at various locations on campus.

Showers and lockers

If you need to have a shower after cycling to campus, your best option is the UWA Recreation Centre. You don’t have to be a member to use shower facilities at the Recreation Centre.

Recreation Centre lockers

You can also use lockers at the Recreation Centre but demand is high, so you’ll need to be quick to secure one at the beginning of the year.

Showers and lockers in other buildings on campus

Ask reception about locker and shower facilities, because some buildings on campus have lockers and showers but they may not be easily accessed by students.
